1: Limit Direct Sun Exposure

While we love soaking up the sun, it's crucial to minimize your hair's exposure to direct sunlight, especially during peak hours when the sun's rays are the strongest between 10am – 2pm. Seek shade whenever possible during extended outdoor activities.

One of the easiest and most effective tips: Throw on a hat or use a UV-protected umbrella that provides shade and helps prevent direct exposure to harmful UV rays. Invest in a wide-brimmed hat or a cap to shield your hair and scalp from the sun. It's simple, trendy, and incredibly effective!

2: Use Hair Products with UV Protection

Just like your skin, your hair needs sun protection. Make sure to use hair products with UV filters or ones specially formulated for sun protection. Leave-in conditioners, serums, or sprays with UV-blocking powers are a must-have this season. This will provide an extra layer of defense. Apply them generously before stepping out into the sun to create a protective barrier.

 Here’s our recommended products:

This is an organic and water-resistant sunscreen spray with SPF 30 protection for hair and scalp. It is a MUST item for a beach/pool/outdoor day! You can simply spray along the scalp, hairline, and hair, and comb it to distribute them evenly.  (Make sure to shake the bottle well before use) A bonus is that it includes color-protecting ingredients as well and it even helps prevent UV-related color fade.

For those who don't want to apply sunscreen to their hair every day, this protective mist might be a good alternative for daily use.  This serves as a daily leave-in treatment and feels weightless. You apply it on towel-dried hair before styling, or just before going out under the sun to protect your hair.  This does not have SPF but the heat-activated keratin in this mist not only repairs heat-stressed hair but also offers superior thermal protection.

3: Embrace Protective Hairstyles

Braids by Kei

Look fabulous and protect your hair simultaneously with some killer protective hairstyles. Go for hairstyles that keep your hair covered or minimize its exposure when you know you would spend extended periods outdoors. Braids, buns, ponytails, or chic updos not only keep your hair covered from sun exposure but also safeguard the delicate ends, which are more prone to damage. It's also an excellent excuse to switch up your look and slay those summer vibes!

Also, give your hair a break from excessive heat styling tools like flat irons and curling wands during the summer. Excessive heat can further damage sun-exposed hair. Embrace natural hairstyles or opt for heatless styling methods.

4: Give a Proper Hair Wash

We get it; washing your hair feels great, but too much shampooing can strip away natural oils, leaving your hair vulnerable to damage. Aim to shampoo your hair every other day or every few days. And instead of shampooing, rinse your hair thoroughly with cool fresh water after spending time in the sun.

However, shampooing after swimming in a pool or the ocean as soon as you can, is a must-do to remove chlorine and saltwater residues that can dry out and damage your hair.  This helps prevent buildup and keeps your hair from becoming brittle. And if you have an extra minute, follow our hair treatment instructions for a pampering experience!

Instruction to treat hair after outdoor water activity:

1: Rinse well to wash away the salted water/chlorine using shampoo

2: Apply treatment to your hair to give sufficient hydration and rinse with cold or lukewarm water

3: Apply leave-in conditioner for extra moisturizing

4: Dry your hair thoroughly - do not leave your hair wet

If you have chemical-treated hair (like color/perm) and feel damage, try this leave-in molecular repair hair mask to reverse the damage. This is an extensive repairing hair mask and you do NOT need to use conditioner - you just give 4 minutes! See below the step-by-step instruction.

1; Shampoo, do not condition.

2: Towel-dry thoroughly.

3: Begin with 1 pump and add more as needed. Maximum recommended usage is 3 pumps.

4: Apply all over, 1 pump at a time.

5: Let sit for 4 minutes. Do not rinse out.

6: Comb, add product + style as usual.

5: Keep Your Hair Hydrated

Hydration is key during the summer months. Sun exposure can dehydrate your hair, leading to breakage and frizz. Keep your hair hydrated by using moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks specifically designed for dry or sun-damaged hair.

Here’s our recommended Leave-in Conditioner for extra moisturizing and repairing. (For Coarse Hair and Fine Hair) You can apply them on towel-dried hair, after shampoos and conditioner.

6: Stay Hydrated from the Inside Out

It may sound irrelevant to hair, but hydrating your body throughout the day by drinking plenty of water is not only beneficial for your overall health but also for your hair. Proper hydration not only helps your overall health but also maintains your hair's moisture balance and prevents it from becoming dry and brittle. It is also essential for healthy hair growth. Hydrated hair is happy hair!

7: Schedule Regular Trims

Don't forget this essential step to keeping your hair healthy and sun-damage-free!

Regular trims get rid of those pesky split ends and prevent them from traveling up the hair shaft. Plus, it helps minimize breakage caused by sun exposure, leaving you with luscious, fabulous hair all summer long.
