1: Japanese Straight Perm - Basics to Know and Common Questions

Japanese Straight Perm

Japanese straightening, also known as thermal reconditioning or Yuko system, is a popular and highly effective hair straightening method that originated in Japan. It's a permanent hair treatment designed to transform curly, frizzy, or wavy locks into sleek, straight perfection.

This process involves restructuring the hair's internal bonds using a special chemical solution and heat (flat iron), to provide long-lasting straightness. The treatment not only straightens the hair but also often imparts a smooth and glossy texture.

【Steps & Process】

Here's an overview of the Japanese straightening process:

1. Consultation & Hair Analysis

Before the treatment, a consultation is typically conducted with a professional stylist to assess your hair type, condition, and desired results, whether it’s prior to the appointment or during the appointment. The stylist analyzes your hair to determine its texture, thickness, and any previous chemical treatments. This analysis helps in customizing the treatment to suit your specific needs.

2. Application of Chemical Solution:

The first step involves applying a special solution to break down the hair's natural bonds, softening and straightening the hair structure.

3. Straightening Process:

After leaving a certain time with the solution, the hair is rinsed and blow-dried. The stylist then uses a flat iron to straighten each section of hair meticulously. This step reshapes the hair's internal structure to achieve the desired straightened effect.

4. Neutralization:

A neutralizing solution is applied to set the new structure of the hair and prevent it from reverting to its previous state.

5. Rinse and Blow-Dry:

The hair is then thoroughly rinsed to remove any remaining chemicals, followed by a blow-dry to reveal the straightened results.

The entire Japanese straightening process can take 3-3.5 hours, depending on the length and thickness of your hair.

【Price】

Japanese straightening costs vary depending on the salon, stylists and hair length. You can see our Price here. (The price of Japanese Straightening is listed under perm)

【How long does it last?】

Japanese straightening is a process of restructuring the hair's internal bonds, so the straightening effect lasts permanently until new hair grows.

【How does it look while growing out? Retouch?】

It's important to note that the straightening effect for the treated part is permanent, but the new growing roots have your natural texture. So, if you wish to maintain a straightened look, periodic touch-ups are recommended, usually every six months or as new hair growth becomes noticeable.

These touch-ups involve treating the regrowth near the roots to keep the overall hairstyle consistent and smooth. At Three Degrees Salon, we offer a root retouch service for clients who did a Japanese Straightening within 6 months.

【Damage】

Japanese Straightening is a chemical hair treatment process, so it has the potential to cause damage if not performed correctly or if the hair is not in a healthy condition. Especially if the hair is already damaged, weak, or overly processed, Japanese Straightening can exacerbate these issues. In that case, a professional stylist will assess the hair's suitability and customize the treatment (if the hair is capable) to minimize the risk of damage. Performing a patch test before the full treatment can also help identify any potential adverse reactions.

However, when it is carried out by a skilled and experienced stylist on hair that is suitable for the treatment, Japanese Straightening is generally considered safe with minimal damage when compared to other types of chemical straightening process such as Rebonding or Relaxers.

【Is it safe? Cancer? Medical Concerns】

There are some questions concerning the potential links to cancer due to the chemical exposures that are used during the straightening process, so we will clarify this topic.

Some hair smoothing treatments have (or used to have) Formaldehyde or Formaldehyde-releasing agents. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, and prolonged exposure may pose health risks. These toxic chemicals are NOT used in Japanese Straightening. Chemical solutions used for Japanese Straighten usually contain ingredients like Thioglycolic acid or Ammonium Thioglycolate.

At Three Degrees Salon, we carry two kinds of straightening and smoothing solutions in multiple levels from two Japanese haircare companies, and their main ingredients are ammonium thioglycolate or cysteamine.  We select or mix the solutions according to the client’s hair condition and desired straight levels.

【Overall Pros & Cons】

Japanese Straighten gives certain benefits such as its natural-looking smooth texture, long-lasting results, low maintenance, timesaving of daily styling time, and versatility (compatible with various hair types from curly to wavy). Some even claim hair health improvement as it seals the cuticles, reducing split ends and breakage. Japanese Straight Perm is a great way to boost confidence for someone who struggles with their frizzy hair!

What are the cons of Japanese Straight Perm that we should keep in mind then?

There is a minor disadvantage such as potential damage due to over-processing and chemical exposure. Another thing to note is that the pin-straight effect is permanent, and it doesn’t wear off gradually even if you want to get back the natural hair texture. It is a commitment.

To maintain the straight look, a touch-up is recommended every six months for your roots that grow. Certain hair colors, especially those with red or henna tones, may not be compatible with Japanese straightening due to potential color alteration.

2: Keratin Treatment

Next, let’s turn our attention to Keratin Treatment – we will guide you through its process, benefits, and considerations, questions surrounding its duration, maintenance, and safety concerns, providing insights into the latest formulations that prioritize hair health and safety.

Keratin Treatment

Keratin Treatment is a semi-permanent smoothing treatment that uses a keratin-based formula to coat the hair shaft. The treatment is known for delivering straighter, smoother, and shiner hair and it helps reduce frizz and make the hair more manageable. It's particularly effective for individuals seeking frizz reduction and improved manageability without permanently straightening the hair.

【Steps & Process】

The steps of Keratin Treatment looks somewhat similar to Japanese Straightening, as it involves applying solutions and using flat-iron, but what’s happening in the hair (restructuring vs coating) and the ingredients of the solution are totally different from each other.

The process of Keratin Treatment includes the application of the keratin solution to the hair, followed by blow-drying and sealing the formula with a flat iron. The whole Keratin Treatment process takes 2.5-3 hours, usually a bit less than Japanese Straightening Process. Many keratin treatments require the client to wait a specified period (usually 72 hours) before washing their hair to allow the formula to set and provide long-lasting results.

【Price】

Price point may depend on the solutions they use and the stylist’s skill set. At Three Degrees Salon, the price of Keratin Treatment is slightly higher due to the material cost. You can see our Price here. (The price of Keratin Treatment is listed under Perm)

【Duration】

The results can last for an extended period (about 3-5 months provided you take good care of your hair), and then it gradually fades over time.

Since the treated hair goes back to your normal hair texture after a certain time, it is recommended to repeat the process for the entire hair every 3 – 5 months if you want to maintain the look.

【Is it safe? Cancer? Medical Concerns】

Some Keratin treatments (used to) use a formula containing a higher concentration of formaldehyde or alternative aldehyde compounds. The presence of formaldehyde or its derivatives in Keratin Treatment formulas has raised safety concerns, and prolonged exposure to high levels of formaldehyde has been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers.

However, many manufacturers now offer formaldehyde-free or low-formaldehyde alternatives. We would suggest checking with the hair salon on the ingredients of the solutions they use when you do Keratin Treatment.

The solution we use at Three Degrees Salon is a formaldehyde-free smoothing treatment that contains Sericin (derived from silk), Keratin (the protein your hair is made up of), Glycolic Acid, Botanical Extracts, and Vitamins. This next-generation smoothing system enables us to deliver the results of a traditional keratin smoothing treatment without harmful chemicals.

The Keratin protein strengthens it against damage and repairs it while smoothing low system acidity to penetrate through the cuticle and infusing the cortex with keratin, botanical extracts, and vitamins. They are sealed inside the cuticle during the heat process.

Damage】

Keratin Treatment typically does not cause significant damage to the hair - Some Keratin Treatment formulations contain nourishing ingredients such as keratin proteins, amino acids, vitamins, and botanical extracts, which can help improve the overall health and condition of the hair.

However, it still involves the use of chemical solutions to smooth the hair cuticle and seal in the keratin formula, even when using formaldehyde-free solutions. It might carry some inherent risks and individual responses such as allergy may vary.

To minimize the risk of any damage, licensed professionals with skills and knowledge must carry out the process with the proper procedures using formaldehyde-free products, followed by proper aftercare. We recommend checking with your hair salon about which solutions they use before booking your appointment.

【Overall - Pros & Cons】

Keratin Treatment offers the advantage of delivering smoother, more manageable hair with reduced frizz, making styling easier and saving time in daily hair routines. With results lasting typically between 3 to 5 months, it provides a semi-permanent solution for individuals seeking long-lasting manageability. Versatile and suitable for various hair types.

However, the treatment comes with considerations such as its relatively higher cost, exposure to chemicals during the process, and the potential for sensitivities or allergic reactions.

Despite these drawbacks, many individuals find the benefits of Keratin Treatment, including improved hair health and enhanced styling options, outweigh the associated considerations, making it a popular choice among those seeking smoother, more manageable hair.

3: Choose between Japanese Straightening vs Keratin Treatment

Interested in the straightening process but not sure which one to go for? We'll help you navigate the decision-making process by outlining the key differences between Japanese Straightening and Keratin Treatment.

3 Key Differences of Japanese Straightening vs Keratin Treatment

  • Duration:
    • Japanese straightening provides a permanent straightening effect, while Keratin Treatment offers a semi-permanent smoothing effect (3-5 months) without permanently altering the hair's structure.
  • Process:
    • Japanese straightening involves a chemical process that breaks and reforms the hair's internal bonds. Keratin Treatment, on the other hand, utilizes a keratin-based formula to create a protective layer on the hair.
  • Damage
    • Japanese Straightening has the potential to cause more damage to the hair due to its permanent nature, the chemical solutions they use, and extensive heat styling. Keratin Treatment, on the other hand, is generally considered less damaging because while it is still a chemical process and uses heat styling, it does not permanently alter the hair's structure. It's essential to choose a formulation that prioritizes hair health and safety.

This is a quick chart to help you understand each unique feature and considerations.

When our clients decide between the two – most of them decide based on their desired look, desired duration period, and their preference.

For example, if you want to keep your straight hair with low maintenance, Japanese Straightening only requires growing root touch-ups every 6 months or so. Keratin Treatment gradually wears off and brings your entire hair back to your natural hair textures, so you will need to constantly repeat the process for your entire hair every 3 – 5 months if you want to keep it straight and smooth.  Although Keratin Treatment causes less damage than Japanese Straightening, it still involves a chemical and heating process, and no treatment is entirely risk-free.

Once again, Three Degrees Salon uses a Formaldehyde-free Keratin Treatment solution, and it is very safe.

4: Who can do a Japanese straightening and Keratin Treatment?

Japanese Straightening and Keratin Treatment is ideal for individuals with curly, wavy, or frizzy hair who desire a sleek, straight look. It is particularly effective for those with natural curls or challenging-to-manage hair textures.

However, if your hair applies to one of the following conditions, contacting your hair stylist beforehand is strongly recommended.

- You have bleached, dyed to red, or used henna tones colors within 6 months

- 70% of your hair is Grey and color-treated

- You have concerns about the volume or potential results of the treatment on your fine hair

- You have African American Hair with varying degrees of curl pattern and thickness

A professional assessment will help determine whether/which of them is a suitable option for your hair and how to proceed to achieve the desired results while maintaining the health and integrity of your hair. At Three Degrees Salon, we can conduct a hair patch test before the procedure to ensure compatibility and prevent adverse reactions if the stylists think it necessary. They may adjust the formula depending on the desired level of straightening and volume and take additional precautions.

Japanese Straightening is a customizable treatment, allowing the stylist to adjust the level of straightening based on your preferences. Whether you want a completely pin-straight look or a more natural straight appearance, the treatment can be tailored to suit your style. Keratin Treatment isn't customizable but it is versatile and suitable for various hair types.

4: After Care Guide

Proper aftercare is essential for maintaining the results of Japanese Straightening or Keratin Treatment. Dive into our recommended aftercare tips, including product recommendations and styling advice to keep your hair looking its best. From sulfate-free shampoo to anti-humidity serums, we've got you covered with all the essentials for healthy, sleek locks.

 Aftercare

Proper aftercare is crucial to maintain the results and to keep your hair healthy. Here are 5 essential aftercare tips you should follow.

  1. Avoid Washing for at least 48 to 72 hours after the treatment.

  2. Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo with lukewarm or cool water.

  3. Apply Sulfate-Free Conditioner Regularly.

  4. Use a Wide-Tooth Comb when your hair is wet.

Here are the salon-quality hair products we recommend:

<Sulfate-Free Shampoo>

Living Proof Restore Shampoo

This fortifying shampoo gently cleanses while reversing damage, making hair look and feel healthier.

<Sulfate-Free Conditioner>

 Living Proof Restore Conditioner

This brings weak, damaged hair back from the brink with this fortifying conditioner that smooths, repairs, and protects hair, leaving it visibly healthier.

<For Styling>

 Milbon Smooth Luminous Softening Oil

This luxurious oil, enriched with baobab oil and olive squalane, is formulated to soften and tame coarse, unruly hair, making hair more flexible and movable and enhances smoothness and shine. It also provides heat protection so apply it before using styling tools (if you ever need.. again!)

Additionally, we recommend refraining from undergoing strong chemical treatments, such as bleaching, coloring to high tones or perming, for some time after Japanese Straightening and Keratin Treatment because chemical treatments can compromise the integrity of the straightening results. Coloring such as dying to darker tones is still achievable but in any cases, we recommend to consult with your stylist if you plan on doing any coloring process as situations may depend on each clients' hair texture and condition.

Also, make sure to schedule regular trims to remove any split ends and keep your hair healthy. Trimming helps maintain the straightened appearance and prevents potential damage from split ends. Japanese Straight Perm and Keratin Treatment enhance smooth and glossy texture, so trimming is important to keep the refined, sleek look.

Lastly, humidity can affect the straightness of the hair, so use anti-humidity products or styling serums to protect your hair in humid conditions.

Milbon - Anti Frizz - Humidity Blocking Oil

This oil contains 5 superior botanical oils (jojoba, argan, baobab, olive, and shea) to lock in optimum moisture distribution. It works both for hair that had straightening/smoothing process and curly and wavy hair to eliminate frizz.
